Definition of Massage : Massage is as old as man himself and has evolved through the need to relieve soreness in the body. We instinctively rub a part of the body if it is knocked. This is a subconscious action that soothes. Touch has played a central role as an instrument of healing. Massage can have both physiological and psychological effects and can relieve minor aches and pains and tension in the body. The stresses of a busy lifestyle may be soothed away enabling you to cope more easily and feel rejuvenated and more alert. In fact many conditions can benefit from this relaxing treatment. Effects of Massage:
Receiving a massage is a very personal experience. One is made to feel very special which will boost morale and well being with a sense of ‘someone really cares’. It can also have a very positive effect on how you ‘feel about your body’ enhancing ‘good body image’ increasing self esteem and boosting your energy !! Apart from the obvious effect of leaving the skin feeling smoother and softer the skin benefits in lots of ways. The temperature is raised bringing the blood to the area supplying fresh nutrients and removing waste, it helps cell regeneration and speeds up metabolism. Regular massage will improve appearance and texture. Circulation is affected because the strokes are performed towards the heart thus stimulating blood flow and lymphatic drainage, which improves cell regeneration and increases fresh oxygenated blood bringing nutrients and removing waste products. Breathing slows down and deepens relaxing the body and increasing efficiency of the lungs. Massage is a beneficial and pleasant form of treatment in relieving stress-related symptoms. It helps to reconnect our mind with our body helping them to function as a balanced and integrated whole . Massage relaxes and so enables the body to release its own natural painkillers which in turn helps tense muscles to loosen and calms the nerves. Massage can help to overcome long-standing emotional and physical problems. Massage is a treatment to ease the stresses and strains of everyday life and give a feeling of well being.
